Colchester Academy Summer School

Summer School at Colchester AcademyThis was the first time we'd run a workshop at a secondary school but, after meeting Colchester Academy at an Eco Schools roadshow, it was an opportunity we were delighted to pursue.

Colchester Academy run a summer school for their Year 7 intake. They have a dedicated vegetable / eco garden area that they wanted to develop and asked Garden Plotters to organise a workshop that would help them get started as part of their summer school schedule.

This meant these pupils had a real head start before start of the new term, they

  • were familiar with their new school and grounds
  • knew each other well
  • could take pride and a responsibility for their contribution to the garden
  • already felt a sense of inclusivity

Pupils had fun creating themed designs for their garden followed by an energy packed afternoon getting stuck into sowing and planting. At the end of the day they all got to take home a 'grass head' kit to see who could grow the longest hair by the end of the holidays!
